The budget was tight so the house is really simple: a clean cuboid form with no frills, assembled from a flat pack of structural insulated timber panels. The drama is focused in three areas which give the house its lift: the cantilever at the front so the house hangs out, the huge opening onto the garden (which did require a big steel in the timber frame) and the delicate folded plate stair whose lightness adds finesse to the open plan interior. There are 3 different types of prefabricated homes, but they all have one thing in common: they are built in climate controlled facilities. However, the three types of prefab homes are different due to the applicable building codes each must follow. The 3 types of prefabricated homes include:
| Mobile homes — Often used interchangeably with the term manufactured, mobile homes are actually a thing of the past due to the National Mobile Home Construction and Safety Act that went into effect in 1976 to improve how the homes were built. Then, the Housing Act of 1980 mandated that the term "manufactured" be used in place of "mobile". So, if you buy a pre-owned home that was built prior to 1976, it is a mobile home. |
| Manufactured homes — Once known as mobile homes, manufactured homes come in three size: Single, double and triple section. Manufactured homes are the improved version of the mobile homes of the past. If the home is built after 1976 according to HUD Code, it is a manufactured home; however, manufactured homes can still be moved!
